Jace Talin walked briskly down the long hallway to the Eradicator's fighter bay. The strict, military gray walls had become like a scond home to Jace in the three years he had been stationed on the Victory class star destroyer as a TIE pilot.
The Eradicator worked mainly on the outer rim of the galaxy in conjunction with the Chiss in an effort to construct superior fighter-craft. This highly secretive ship-development program, known only as Wraith, had been in service since the Battle of Endor when the Empire finally realized the inferiority of their own craft to the Rebel pilots. Wraith had, in its many years of service, turned out many highly superior fighter-ships including teh TIE Defender.
The war with the New Republic may have been considered over, but Wraith had kept operating in secret, outside of Republic influence none the less, and it continued to pour out design after design of fighters that could easily rival the alliance's aerial dominance.
As Jace strode to the bay of the Eradicator, it was one of these ships that he was thinking of. In all of the time that Wraith had been in existence, only a handfull of its desigs had been deemed financially sound enough to put into service and nearly all of these ships had been built in the Corellian or Imperial ship-yards. This was why Jace found it so odd that now a ship had not only been approved, but constructed abourd the Eradicator.
Jace himself was a test-pilot. He had flown, at least in simulation, everything that Wraith had put out for the past three years and could easily be considered the finest pilot in the Imperial Navy along with the few other eilite piolts involved with the operation. Physically; he was tall, an oddity amongst the other pilots, with the dark hair and fine skin that identified him as Corellian. At 22 years old, he was the youngest pilot associated with Wratih.
Jace was shaken out of his wonderings as turned a corner into the bay. A voice called out to his left. "Captin Talin!"
Jace turned to see an older man in a blackened jum-suit running towards him. He smiled. Doctor Zarrif Kal was not what one expected when one thought of Chiss. He shared their charectaristic blue skin and red eyes, but that was it. He had a quick whit and an even quicker smile and could hold hi sown in the fiercest of brawls, a side-effect of having spent a lifetime amongst fighter-pilots.
"Hello there Kal," Jace said, addressing him by the last name. "What's on the agenda today? Quite a bit of secrecy about here lately." Most imperial officers would have been shocked at the display of informality, but the workers on teh Eradicator had been together, in some cases, for years without even stepping off of the ship. This had allowed for the development of extereme commraderie even between the men and Admiral Namin who directed the operation.
Kal smiled widely, "I've a bit of good news for you old man. Our new ship is ready."
Jace groaned, "So tell me somthing that hasn't been broadcasted all over the ship for the past week. "
Kal laughed, "Yes, I guess the intelligence committee would be rather displeased with our lack of secrecy on this project. But, at any rate, please follow me."
Kal turned abruptly and raced accross the deck to an isolated fighter hanger on the far side of the bay. Jace had to pick up his pack to a quick jog to keep up with the energetic little Chiss. Upon reaching the hanger, Kal whipped out his small ID card and opened the large door to the hanger.
As the bay door slid open, Jace's eyes widened at the sight that lay beyond. Kal grinned mischievously, his eyes dancing with delight. "What do you thin?"
The ship that greeted Jace was astounding. It resembled a TIE Interceptor, but with inverted wings. From the doesal and ventral sides of the cockpit, there cam forth two fins that were each about two meters in lheight and came forward about half the length of the two side solar panels. From it bristled a wide array of weapons. The tips of each panel sported dual blasters, plus a strange weapon that Jace had never seen before. The cockpit ball had a missle launcher mounted to it as well as two more blasters. The weaponry was topped off by a single ion cannon atop the cockpit.
Jace stepped forward to get a better look at the ship which, despite its massive array of weapons, was no larger than an interceptor. He turned for a moment, however, and smiled at Kal. "It's beautiful."
Kal smiled a laughing smile in return. "May I present to you," he began with mock formality, "the TIE Devastator."
