History:
Shortly after being born on Coruscant, Geo Baké was brought to the Jedi Academy by Master Plo Koon, who was on a typical walk through the lower levels of the planet-wide city. Son of a man addicted to Death Sticks and a poor prostitute, the parents had no qualms about giving up their newborn boy. To them, it was one less mouth to feed. At the Temple, Geo underwent the usual intensive youngling training until the age of nine, where it became apparent that not only was he ready to become a Padawan, but that he was going to be a Jedi Consular.
It was a day not very different from any other day. Geo woke at his normal early hour, did his assigned chores and reported to the training area. Hin Kina’ak, a Knight in charge of Force training, told the boy to sit in a corner of the room and to meditate, since the other younglings hadn’t arrived yet. Baké obeyed and took a seat in a corner.
After relaxing, Geo soon fell into a typical meditative trance. However, this time he felt awkward. He could feel the world around him and suddenly he had a perplexing feeling. Hin looked up in awe as he saw a heavy tome being levitated in front of his pupil. After regaining his senses, the Knight shouted, “Geo!”
Roused from his trance, Geo broke his concentration and the book fell in front of him with a loud thud. Looking solemn, Hin spoke, “Geo, come with me.”
Baké rose from his place and followed Hin to the Jedi Council’s main chamber. Hin bowed and Geo quickly followed suit. Yoda spoke first, “Hin, glad to see you we are. What help can we be?”
“Master Yoda, this youngling, Geo Baké, seems to have found a rather powerful connection to the Force. In light of this, I request that he be allowed to become a Padawan.”
Mace Windu stared tentatively at the two before saying, “Wait outside, we will discuss this matter.”
The two Jedi exited the room and waited outside. Mere minutes passed by, but for Geo it seemed like hours. Hin, however, seemed content and had a somewhat knowing expression on his face. After what seemed like an eternity to the youngling, Geo and Hin were summoned back into the chambers. The first thing they noticed was all of the Masters standing, and they quickly made their way to the center of the room. Yoda spoke, “Come to a decision, we have. A Padawan, Geo will be.” Geo sighed with relief as Yoda began to speak again, “And Hin,” Yoda continued, “Geo’s Master, you will be.”
With that, Geo entered into the supervision and guidance of his Master, Hin Kina’ak, a Kel Dor with exceptional Force abilities. This attribute lead to an important and lasting bond. Geo, a boy with impressive abilities for his age, was going to be trained by a Knight near Master-ship due to his own Force abilities, and needed only to train a Padawan in order to be considered for induction. This was a year before the Naboo conflict, and eleven years before the event that would change his life forever.
It had been almost eleven years to the day since Geo began studying under Hin, and the boy had come a long way. His training was coming to an end and in a year, maybe two, Geo would be ready to take the trials. It was basically a normal day on Coruscant. Baké and Hin had just returned from a successful border dispute on Alderaan and were looking forward to a break. However, their hopes were cut short when the Council received an urgent message.
It was simple; Obi-Wan Kenobi had been captured on Geonosis and needed help. Any and all nearby Jedi were going to be sent to rescue him. Needless to say, Geo wanted to help. However, something told him that there was more to this mission than a Jedi’s life. This something was far more powerful than the Jedi could comprehend or contend with. Knowing that he was not ready to engage such a threat, the now twenty-year old expressed his concerns to his Master and requested that he be allowed to complete his training before joining the war that was sure to follow. Hin was very wary about this idea and went to consult the Council. After hours of deliberation, the Jedi Masters all agreed to accept Geo’s request and gave Hin hyperspace coordinates and a holovid to give to his Padawan. Hin soon found his trainee, delivered the coordinates, gave him the holovid, and wished him well. Geo’s Master also had a gift to give the young man. Opening his lightsaber’s hilt, Hin pulled a strange crystal out of a socket. He handed it to Geo stating that it was Solari, an ancient crystal with powerful Light Side properties. Hin said that he had found it on a mission to Tatooine in an old cave next to an ancient device that seemed like a Star Map, and now he was going to give it to him. The young man accepted it graciously and placed the gem in his pocket.
After saying one final goodbye, Geo got into a Jedi Starfighter, loaded his friendly astromech droid, and took off. After exiting the atmosphere, Geo punched in his coordinates and entered hyperspace. Where he left hyperspace, even Geo wouldn’t have guessed. The Padawan looked down at the planet only a few hundred kilometers away and scanned it for its identity. The R2 unit emitted a series of beeps and whistles and displayed the planet’s information. Geo had entered into the orbit of Ilum. Even from space, the Jedi could sense the strong presence of the Force. Following his instincts, Geo entered the atmosphere and landed outside of what seemed like a temple.
After exiting the ship, Geo quickly ran through the snow and entered the building. He stared in awe as multitudes of crystals, blue and green, rose through the ramps and stairs, forming intricate patterns and odd formations. Continuing forward, Geo saw two Jedi sparring in an open chamber, in between two rising ramps. He watched carefully as the duo, both female, went into an increased pace, nearly a blur, and then came to an abrupt halt. The seemingly older woman turned to Geo, “It appears we have a visitor.”
Baké seemed a bit apologetic, sorry that he had disturbed their training. However, he regained his composure, bowed, and introduced himself, “Greetings Master Jedi, my name is Geo Baké. I am a Padawan from Coruscant, and I have come here to complete my training under orders from the Jedi Council.”
The Master seemed wary and asked for proof. Geo remembered the holovid that Hin had given him and quickly gave it to the woman. What appeared on the device was a recording of Yoda explaining Geo’s circumstances. At the end of the message, Yoda granted the woman permission to break the sacred code and temporarily train a second Padawan, also stating that the young man’s training was near an end.
The woman snapped off the holovid, gave it back to the Geo, and spoke, “What form of lightsaber combat do you use?”
“Soresu, although I am finding myself becoming partial to the ideals of Form Zero.”
The older Jedi stared tentatively, “What are you training to be?”
“A Jedi Consular.”
After more careful thought, the woman spoke again, “Very well, I am Luminara Unduli and the Padawan you see behind me is my apprentice, Barriss Offee.”
Geo bowed to the younger woman who returned the gesture. “Well Geo, let your training continue.”
Another year and a half passed and finally it seemed that Geo’s time had come. Luminara sat the man down and told him that his trials were going to commence. She asked him what size lightsaber he wished to create. Geo took a moment to consider his options. After a moment, Geo answered, “A lighstaff.”
Luminara almost recoiled in shock, “A…A lightstaff? They haven’t been used in ages. They’re archaic. Why a lightstaff?”
Geo formulated his response, “A lightstaff is the essential message of a Jedi. It can be non-lethal, hard to predict, and defensive. All of the things a Jedi should be.”
Luminara considered his response. Then, she rose and went to a room connected to the one they were in. After looking for a few moments, she returned with a long rectangular metal block. “Use this block to form your lightsabers hilt. You should save room for power cells, crystals, and other components. May the Force be with you.”
After that, Luminara left Geo alone to prepare his new weapon. Baké sat down and began to meditate. Soon he established a strong connection with the block and slowly began to remove pieces of it with the Force. After many hours, he would stop, eat, rest, and continue the next day. This pattern went on for two months, and finally, Geo finished. He walked up to Luminara, who was sparring with Barriss, and presented his finished hilt. “Very good, Geo. Here is your green crystal, signifying your rank as a Consular. Place it in the hilt and activate it.”
Geo did as he was told and out shot a bright green blade. Now he had to complete his final trial, venturing out on a solo mission. Luminara told him to travel out into a crystal cavern nearly 50 kilometers to the southeast. There he was to find another crystal for his lightstaff and return to the temple. Geo wasted no time and left for the cave that night. After traveling for five days, Baké found the caves detailed by Luminara and went in to find a crystal. Geo searched until he found a Bondar gem and quickly placed it in the staff.
After another five-day journey, Geo returned to find the temple in ruins and no trace of the Jedi. It appeared that the temple had been totally destroyed by a huge force, no doubt led by the isolation. However, it was time to train, not to worry. The man, having completed his trials, assumed the title of Jedi Knight and continued his exercises. Separatists and Count Dooku, who hated the Jedi enough to commit such an act. However, Geo’s hesitations to join the war had been well founded. Had the man joined the war effort, he surely would have died due to inexperience, but it really didn’t matter. No one knew he was alive anyways so for all intents and purposes, he was dead. Geo also knew that the Dark Side was ready to seize the Galaxy. Nothing he could do could stop it, so the only option was to remain on Ilum, even though it would mean complete isolation.
In time, Geo became very skilled with his lightstaff and was able to discover a variety of new Powers as well improve on his old ones. Eventually, Geo felt the Dark Side subside from the Galaxy only to arise for a brief period of time after a few years. In all, the Knight had spent thirty-eight years on Ilum, and his time of training was over. After cleaning and repairing his starfighter and astromech droid, Geo departed from Ilum to do his duty to as a Jedi and restore peace and order to the troubled Galaxy.
