Little is known about Ma-Ta Rissa's early years. She is the result of a dancer in Jabba the Hutt's palace and some unknown alien drifter, since her mother could not narrow down to the exact paternal donor. The only indication of Rissa's unusual background is her eyes, which change appropriate colors to suit her mood. Her natural eye color is unknown.
Rissa's mother, Habesha, refused to put her daughter into dancer training at a young age; she kept her daughter's innocence preserved until Rissa's fifth year, when Habesha met an untimely death in a monster pit by accident. Out of respect for Habesha, Jabba permitted the child's staying as a server and pickpocket in the gambling dens until she became of age. Rissa, refuseing to follow her mother's fate, hid her blossoming appearance, blended in the background, and silenced any who tried to proposition Jabba for her "services." The Hutt let her continue pickpocketing well into her teens, believing her to be too unattractive to gain male favors. She kept this charade up for quite some time, until her eighteenth year, when Imperial Lieutenant Jared Meers was stationed by the Empire at Jabba's home.
Walking in on a punishment for getting caught, Jared felt sorry for the young girl and ordered for Rissa to be given to him for the night, so he could "teach her to be humble." Rissa attempted to kill him and escape when brought to his chambers, only for the two of them to reach an understanding and platonic relationship. Friendship turned to mutual lust, and Rissa became Jared's mistress for his two-year stay. When he was called back to the Imperial Center, he bought Rissa from a reluctant Jabba and brought her to his home.
Jared and Rissa lived happily together in the Center for a blissful three years, in which she made friends with Iris Kieral and Judge Handyle, two influential members of the political world. In this time, Jared arranged for her to be trained as a lady of high standing, only interrupted by his teaching her defense with his chosen weapon, the Vibro-Blade. She soon became as deadly as him with the sword. But fate is not kind to aliens in the Empire, and through a series of misunderstandings and orders, Jared attempted to kill his concubine, only for Iris and her friend Nekessla to rescue an almost-dead Rissa.
When fully recovered, Rissa was trained by Nekessla and her crew how to defend herself while they attempted to find a hiding place for her, where Jared and his Imperial connections would never find her. They finally decided upon the remote Outer Rim planet of Nar Shadaa, where Rissa was set up with a bar and inn, which she remodeled after a cafe in an old 'holo she loved. Now cold to all male companionship, Rissa did not even attempt to give the time of day to one of Nekessla's smugglers, Zane Ryan.
Rissa still lives on Nar Shadaa, willing to pour drinks for whoever has the cash, and will let anyone who comes with a written recommendation from a friend stay the night. After years of Zane chasing her and taking care of her whenever she got herself mixed up in danger, Rissa finally let him stay and lives with him.
She hates anything in an Imperial uniform intensely, and knows that someday she will have to face her former lover and now enemy, Jared Meers.
Currently on Zeltros, Rissa is trying to relax after having gone through a sudden surprise visit from Iris (carting along her new lover), flying to an old Imperial base after finding out about Nekessla's kidnapping, and now suffering from strange and frightening symptoms that cannot be narrowed down to a certain disease...
Zane Ryan-- a smuggler and pilot who used to work for Nekessla until he met Ma-Ta Rissa during one of Nekessla's missions. He followed Rissa to Nar Shadaa and now lives with her at her cantina, Rissa's. Zane has no family left, and rarely speaks about them, since they were brutally butchered in front of his eyes by Imperials when he was a teenager; only he and his mother survived, his mother soon dying from abuse as a Imperial prostitute. Understandably, he hates Imperials and anyone attached to them.
Keiran-- a pickpocket/bartender on Nar Shadaa. He works at Rissa's cantina because he is one of the few willing to work with Rissa, or brave enough to put up with her attitude.
Lieutenant Jared Meers-- a loyal officer of the Empire. He first met Rissa when assigned to Tatooine, made her into his mistress, then attempted to kill her when hearing that she was having an affair with a judge. His location is now unknown to Rissa; she only knows that he escaped during her rescue.
