It has been storming all week. My dog is afraid of storms. But he's not afraid of the havoc they often wreak. On fences.
Last night our neighbor's dead tree fell into our back yard, breaking a giant hole in the fence. Which we installed specifically to keep him in, because he's a rabbit dog, and once he's off, he will forget where he is once he wears out and not be able to remember/scent/find his way home.
Like today. Attached is a picture of how far he got before we found him. We'd never have even imagined he'd go this far without the help of the tag we had on his collar (which he promptly slipped out of), which sent a Facebook flurry out by the people who kept seeing him, trying to feed/water/catch him, and posting his pics on facebook.
So, I found him by the help of random facebook people who kept spotting him in that neighborhood very far away from ours, while Han was at home printing out fliers to post everywhere. We would never have posted one that far away. This is the farthest he's gotten.
The dog in question:
The only thing I didn't appreciate was the self righteous dog owner (there's always one in the crowd) who asked "what's wrong with him? He's emaciated! He was lying on the side of the road and so he either got hit or he was too weak to walk."
Um. He gets 4 cups of food per day of the good stuff. He eats it whenever he feels like it. He also gets 2 cups of the same thing in his Kong, which he prefers eating out of. He also gets the occasional hot dog, slice of turkey, or chicken. He sleeps in my bed. For her to say to me, "you need to take a little more care of your dog" made me want to rip her heart out. I told her, "you need to be a little less judgmental," at which point she suddenly opined that he'd probably been hit by a car (he hadn't; he came fully functional to my car and jumped in, just tired).
Also, he's a Pharaoh Hound. They enjoy lying in the sun and he was probably frakking tired from running that whole way. Across a busy road.
So I thank her for her help. But there was obviously a "holier than thou" purpose behind it.
Anyway, he's home now. Here he is on his adventure, after he slipped his collar, taken by a random very nice person.
