Faces of Epics
NOTE: All questions are voluntary.
How long have you been involved with Epics?
For the better part of 7 years, since its inception (on ezboard) as Star Wars Tales.
How many Characters do you write on Epics?
Which characters do you write?
I write Luke Halcyon, Kabal, Marcus Arete, and Johnathan Claw.
Can you explain briefly how he/she/they came into being?
Well, Luke was my first character, and I wanted a force user, but not a total Jedi, cause I felt that itís too hard to write being all good all the time. At the same time I didnít want a Sith, cause I like to be the hero, so I went with a smuggler with force sensitivity.
Kabal was invented about the same time to be Lukeís main antagonist. Heís actually very close conceptually to General Grievous, a cyborg jedi hunter. However I had the idea 6 years prior to Return of the Sith.
Marcus Arete was invented so that I could participate in the Battle of Ithor storyline as I had read the story and had been impressed by the characters and the story. I basically based him off of John McClaine with a little Rambo.
Johnathan Claw was because I have always been fascinated by werewolves and the feral nature of humanity. So I invented a Star Wars version of a werewolf, and based his personality on Wolverine from the comics. Also I wanted to try a new writing style, writing him totally in the first person. Heís actually my most recent character and surprisingly the one I get the most compliments about.
What avatars represent your characters? Why did you pick them?
Luke-Robert Leeshock: What can I say I was really into Earth: final conflict at the time, and the look seemed to fit.
Kabal - Arnold Schwarzenegger: Honestly, it was the best pic of a cyborg I could find.
Marcus - Jason Statham: Originally I had Vin Diesel as Marcusí avatar, and I think heís still in his bio actually. Sam came up with the idea for Jason Statham around the same time Epics was launched when I was getting all my characters separate accounts. She made all my avatars, and my sigs, and changing the avi to Jason was a great suggestion, as he fits the character a lot better.
Johnathan - Hugh Jackman: He was based off Wolverine, who else would I have, I mean honestly, :)
Do you have a favorite post you've written, or favorite story you have been involved in?
Luke - Honestly, the latest one where heís developing as a character is my favorite storyline of his, although an honorable mention is the one where he went Dark Side, before it got all crazy.
Kabal - Funny, heís one of my oldest characters and I havenít written him much. My favorite post with him he only has one line in it, and itís the one where the Imperial Doctor is rebuilding him for the Empire. Itís done in the form of journal entries, and I thought it was an interesting approach to a post.
Marcus - Marcusí last post I was particularly proud of, but the last two posts of the Battle of Naboo deserve mention. My favorite storyline is the past story written with Sam.
Johnathan - I love every post I do with this guy. Itís hard to get into character cause its first person, but when I do, it comes out really smooth. Iíve actually had moments where Iíve gone back and read a post and have seen parts and lines that I donít remember writing. Itís pretty neat.
Did you develop your characterís back stories or did you add it in after the character was established?
I had the basic background for all my characters as required by Epics, but mostly Iíve filled in with past posts and revelations in present posts about my characterís pasts. Some the seeds were planted early on, but nothing was really fleshed out except the relationship with Sam and Marcus. That was planned from the beginning.
What other parts of Epics do you enjoy?
Iím a big fan of movies and I love the movie quote trivia. The funny pictures always crack me up. I find the past stories very interesting. To see where a character came from is surprising at times.
How did you find Epics?
I was invited to join Star Wars Tales by Corran, Sam, and Han, after their split from New Horizons.
Are the people in your life (spouse, significant other, family) supportive of your time on Epics?
My fiancťe is very supportive, she has actually begun to edit my posts and help me grow as a writer.
Do you roleplay anywhere else?
Not anymore, the quality of the stories and the family environment on Epics canít be matched anywhere else on the web. The Admins make Epics run smooth. There is no infighting, the posts are detailed and there is a coherent story. I used to play D&D, and run my own game, but that fell apart early this past year. Right now itís all Epics all the time.
And now, for the off duty questions...
Real name and age? Please enclose a picture of yourself if you are so inclined.
Where do you live?
Long Island, New York
What is your occupation?
Assistant Software Engineer
What is your favorite type of music/band?
Mainly alternate rock, but really anything but hard metal, hard rap, or depressing country.
What kinds of hobbies do you have?
I play a lot on Magic the Gathering: Online. Itís my chief hobby outside of writing. I have xbox360 and wii for console gaming, and watching movies.
What is your favorite way to relax?
Honestly, to get a good song going in the car and just sing along. That helps after a hard day at work. Doing well in a Magic tourney helps too.
Is there anything special you do when you write?
I usually drink a lot of diet coke, and/or water in general. My fiancť says something about exercising my brain makes me dehydrated. I donít know. It helps to have music for an action or emotional sequence to get me in the right mindset.
Did you always love writing, and do you write anything else?
Actually no, I hated writing for a long time. English was my worst subject. I guess the drive to be creative with rping and stories led me to enjoy writing. I still hate English class though. Iíve written a few movie reviews and video games reviews for my college paper, but nothing really since then.
And the obligatory Star Wars question: what is your favorite Star Wars moment?
Return of the Jedi - Luke being pushed off the plank into the sarlacc pit, and him flipping up, and over and catching the lightsaber from R2. I still get little chills up my spine, ever since I first saw it when I was 8 years old.
