Faces of Epics
How long have you been involved with Epics?
Three years. Almost four. Thatís a long time.
How many characters do you write on Epics and who are they?
Two. Leto, obviously. The otherís a secret. :glance2
Can you explain briefly how he/she/they came into being?
Leto came into being because the Rats came into being. Epics has always had its Rogues, and on the opposing side the Paladins. The pride of their respective military corps, the top in their class, ďWe only accept the best of the best,Ē their images on all the posters on the walls of all the little pilots who want to be just like them when they grow up. Elite pilots in elite squadrons doing elite things.
And then you have the Womprats. Theyíre not always bad pilots, or bad soldiers, but they are always flawed. As respected as the Rogues are, the Rats are disliked or loathed. As uptight and proper the Paladins are, the Rats are boorish, rude, and at times quite drunk. The Frak-up Squadron, because every member is there because they screwed up. Theyíre the poor nameless bastards you see in the films being used as cannon fodder to distract the enemy while the named characters go off to be heroes.
They needed a leader, so I created Leto. Whereas most Rats are loud, drink, gamble, and fight, Leto is reserved, prefers to drink in private, gambles to lose, and only gets into a fight when he has a reason toÖ usually. Heís always been a little disconnected from the rest of his squadron, but at the same time heís the main force trying to keep them together and keep them alive. Itís a doomed mission, but heís devoted his life to it.
What avatars represent your characters? Why did you pick them?
Jamie Bamber. Battlestar Galactica was in the middle of the first half of its second season when the Womprats came into being, and I thought the actor fit. Using an actor who has played a pilot as the avatar for your pilot character helps.
Do you have a favorite post you've written, or favorite story you have been involved in?
There really isnít a favourite because I favour all of them. There are parts of every story Iíve been in and read and written that I enjoy, that make each one important. I wouldnít put one above the other because for the qualities I love in one, the qualities in another make me love it just as much.
As for my own posts, Iím a littleÖ over-critical.
Did you develop your characterís back stories or did you add it in after the character was established?
Both. Itís like writing a puzzle, and in the beginning Iíve put all the edges together. The more I write him, the more pieces I discover and where they fit in overall picture. It delights me that I know there are still empty spaces that need to be filled in.
What other parts of Epics do you enjoy?
The ooc forums, the feedback::testing zone forum for the art creations there, the Mirrorworld sections, all of it. I donít always post everywhere, Iím not as talkative as other members of the staff, but I enjoy taking part when I do and reading when I donít.
What is the hardest thing about modding a roleplaying board, and what is the best part?
Iíd have to say the hardest thing is the brutal Admin regime that crushes us under its heel daily, whipping us as we toil away to maintain their kingdom. The best part is probably the rampant power abuse.
Seriously, I just love taking part in maintaining a place I enjoy and keeping it running. Iíd say the hardest part is knowing the best thing to do sometimes, and seeing the places you need to improve yourself on.
Are the people in your life (spouse, significant other, family) supportive of your time on Epics?
Thereís only one person who knows I write here but theyíre supportive. It makes me happy, and they like that. Iíve met some great people here, including a very dear best friend. I was in a dark place when I first came here, and Iíve changed a lot since then. For the better.
Do you roleplay anywhere else?
And now, for the off duty questions...
Real name and age? Please enclose a picture of yourself if you are so inclined.
Greg. Old enough to know the 90s, the 80s, and the late part of the 70s.
One person here has seen a photo, and theyíre the only one who needs to. And probably the only one who gives a damn, too. :p
Where do you live?
Florida, in the United States. Before that, I lived somewhere else, and before that when I was a wee little boy I lived somewhere else again.
What is your occupation?
I used to do something else, and then I emigrated here to do another something else.
What is your favorite type of music/band?
I really canít limit myself to a favourite. Iíll listen to one thing one day, and listen to another the next. Post-rock, rock, folk, derivations or combinations of the three, trip hop, piano compositions or orchestras, blues, jazz, ďpopĒ, hip hop if itís the right kindÖ
The truth is, Iíll give almost anything a try at least once.
What kinds of hobbies do you have?
I run every morning if I can. No matter what, I always try to make sure I run because no matter how shitty my day turns out to be, that brief period of time Iím happy.
Iím an amateur carpenter, but I havenít really done much of that lately. I play the piano or guitar sometimes, but Iím shit at it.
What is your favorite way to relax?
Talking to my best friend. She knows who she is. Listening to my significant otherís voice on the other end of the phone.
You can sometimes get strawberries and other things from the local farms in the area. That, or beer or a good bottle of scotch, is nice sometimes.
What is your favorite ice cream?
Donít really have one. Donít have ice cream that often and when I do, I donít go for any particular flavour.
Mountain hideaway or beach house?
Now youíre just making things up. (Untrue, I copied it from another questionnaire I found. :p ~Sam)
Ö Probably the hideaway.
Do you have a special talent?
Alcoholic. Lot better at that now, though.
What is the farthest youíve been from home?
Depends on what you mean by home. If you mean, ďFurthest youíve been from your current residence,Ē wellÖ I havenít really counted. Iíve been everywhere, and Iím not really happy about that.
If you mean, ďFurthest youíve been from the place you consider home,Ē right now thatís 4,000 miles.
Is there anything special you do when you write?
Not really. Sometimes I listen to music. Post-rock, or something simple. Something I can think to. Not usually something with lyrics, because while a song can give me ideas, when Iím actually writing it can be distracting.
Did you always love writing, and do you write anything else?
Sort of. Before I even came here, I used to write letters to my nephew when he was a lot younger than he is now. Little short stories, about an incompetent spy, based on the places and people I was around. When I came home, and I could see him, Iíd read them to him.
When I came to the United States, and when I started to write on board roleplays, I actually hated it. What I wrote made me miserable, and I think thatís why I did it. Then I found Epics, then I started to write the Rats and Leto, I wrote with some of the best people Iíve known, one of whom is my favourite writer, and I learned to start loving what I wrote. Learned to enjoy it.
What extra issues does being a moderator of the site bring to you?
There are times when something causes me to blow up. Itís rare, but it happens. Iím not happy about it and itís usually a mistake. Thatís my own personal failing, and sometimes I have to tell myself to just keep my damn mouth shut. Iím usually good at knowing when to do that, but sometimes Iím terrible at it.
Iím getting better, though. I hope.
